Dar es Salaam

 26/07/2011

Another early start as we frantically packed for the ferry to Dar.
I am slightly disappointed not to have gone to Prison island to see the turtles, but I totally enjoyed my time on Zanzibar.

Having heard about the girls' one day in Dar does not set me the with greatest expectations and I'm already thinking back to the time I spent in Central America and experiences in Guatemala City and Tegus. Busy, hectic and unsafe.
Joy of joys.

I was also apprehensive about the ferry journey, having been sick last time I was on one.  I can't say I thoroughly enjoyed the sea crossing, but at least I didn't throw up.

We were met in Dar by Lara as well as a lot of over-enthusiastic taxi drivers that seems to accompany arriving at airports and ferry terminals in Africa.
I was relieved that Read had got my message as I didn't really want to get a taxi on my own.

We arrived at the YMCA to find that there were no beds, so we were re-allocated to the neighbouring sister version YWCA.  We were definitely kept waiting for a long time before our rooms were ready and I was reminded very much of the Salvation Army.
Today turned into an admin day; getting money, sim cards for phones and sorting through our bags ready for training the next day.
We weren't impressed by the frequent powercuts which provuded us with no fan or light from about 5pm onwards (apparently this is a common trend at the moment).

We had wanted to stay in for food at the YWCA - feeling a little vulnerable, but they only served food until lunch.
In the end we went out to the City Cafe, a Westernised restaurant in a lovely setting, which was just a short walk away. Normally I would have gone for something sensible, but I'd brought nothing with me except 10,000TSH so could only afford the bare minimum.

I couldn't wait to leave Dar!
