Another long drive beckons today, with pretty much the only stop being a couple of hours Kayaking. I'm a bit disappointed as I was hoping to do White water rafting when the tour finished, but apparently the white water rafting season ends before my tour finishes (I guess because the water becomes too dangerous). Anyway, Kayaking should be fun.
On the way there we stopped off (for a toilet break) at the point where the last spike was laid on the Canadian Pacific railway (3000 miles worth of track!!!). It's an incredible feet, given what they've had to carve their way through in order to get this thing built. Now it serves as a major route transporting goods throughout Canada, with enormously long trains going on for absolutely ages - you wouldn't want to get stuck at a level crossing with one of these things travelling past, and of course the Rocky Mountaineer (a passenger train). We were lucky to witness one of these cargo trains going by.
We then headed off to Revelstoke to a really picturesque lake where we had a go at kayaking. I think I've done kayaking before, when I was in the Katherine Gorge in Australia (with baby crocs in the water), but I can't remember. Thankfully, only fish in this lake so if we did fall in it was a little less of a scary prospect. I did find it quite hard work. Kayaking looks a lot less sedate than it is and I found myself aching.
Still it was all very beautiful, as were the free snack bars we got given.
More driving now, and still no Rockies, but we were getting closer...
Wahey!!! We've finally reached the Rockies. Apologies for the poor quality photo, it was taken from the bus.
Really looking forward to tomorrow, as we'll be hitting the famous lakes. :D
